This reminds me much more of Robin and Marian. A 1976 movie about the death of Robin hood (by poisoning). It starred Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn. It mostly flew under the radar...but I seeing it on tv in early 80's.

It made Robin's death an act of love by Marian.

I can only think that this is the feel they are going for with Hugh, who is now is his late 50's.
