See AllIs The Nightmare Before Christmas A Halloween Movie? Director Henry Selick Settles The Debate Once & For All
I think it leans more towards halloween but I'd consider it both. I think there's vastly more marketing and products and tie ins to the halloween side than christmas.
I work in a Walmart and pretty much September through March you can't go a day without seeing jack skellington or characters in the film somewhere in stores. It's all over valentines with love themes for Jack and sally etc. So it's always been more about massive marketing and toy and merchandise than the movie.
The movie is good but the merchandise and extreme over saturation of related toys stuffies and wearables has been the norm for 30 years now.
Jack skellington is easily in top 10 or maybe 5 most recognized film characters at this point. During the 5 months a year his face is everywhere.
All the books and now even Manga series that continues the story lines (my wife loves those).
So for me I am 100 percent on the halloween film camp.
