The writer is forgetting about the Star Trek:TNG episode where Picard dies and Q gives him an opportunity to rewrite his past. If Picard changes history, he forgets the lesson learned from Q about past regrets. Getting stabbed in the heart is what changes a brash and reckless young man into the person, and captain, Picard eventually becomes.
