I think Shaw has not considered what an improvement killing the Mouth of Sauron is over the book version. Aragorn uses the palantir to reveal himself to Sauron in an attempt to divert his attention on him. At the Black Gates, his intention is no different, and he wants to make sure that Sauron will not decide otherwise. Like a great poker player, he murders the Mouth of Sauron to amplify his intentions shown in the palantir and improve their chances of getting Sauron's attention with an unexpected brazen act. Mortensen played the scene as a character with some trepidation to Frodo and Sam's fate, but he also played it as a leader taking charge and telling his friends that he would not accept Sauron's bluff. It works on multiple levels and far exceeds the moment in the book. I think Tolkien would have approved. Don't forget: Tolkien never considered the work finished, so revisions would be expected. And he also wished to hand it off to other artists to create in his world....
