Gunn cleverly knows what he's doing. He has broken bones, when they heal, it hurts. People often forgot, Superman is not necessarily indestructible. We don't know what caused his injuries. He could have remnants of Kryptonite in his system that is being burned out of him, even if we don't see it.
As for the robots, they have human intelligence, so of course they're going to have human emotions.
