Fellow Patrick: Fistful of Dollars, Magnificent Seven, The Departed — all remakes in which white actors replaced Asian actors. No one denigrated these movies for doing so. those movies were actually praised for what they brought to the story. So I don’t see how remakes that replace a white lead with a person of color or even a woman or gay should be interpreted as a threat to white people. there is room in this world for diverse stories, even when they are remakes.

Fistful of Dollars, the first movie of the trilogy, is itself a remake of the great Akira Kurosawa movie Yojimbo. Despite this, Fistful of Dollars is rightfully regarded as a great movie in its own right. Sometimes remakes, when done right, can demonstrate creativity through its interpretation of the movie it was based.
