Actually George Miller has said something very similar to this in an interview. He said he always believed the first three movies were being told around a campfire about Max. That these totally different groups were having these experiences then retelling their story as a legend. It does explain the time jumps etc. Also explains the fact there is a narrator who begins each movie.

Not saying it's canon but it sure beats alot of theories.
