Both the boys grow up to see their kids reach adulthood. John watched Jack grow up and get married, but John died in the ambush where Jack's wife was shot causing her to miscarry,. Spencer watches John grows up and has a family of his own.

Sheridan has managed to show the paths of both Dutton's and Rainwater's families in 1883, 1923 so we can also understand Rainwater's mindset in Yellowstone. We can't ignore or gloss over what happened in those eras but it important to The Nation's/Rainwater's history and why they want the Dutton's land back.
