See AllI Never Realized How Dark Back To The Future’s Ending Was Until Now
I never looked at it as a better financial status situation. If they were really that much better off financially, they probably would have moved to a wealthy Beverly Hills type community. I always interpreted his epilogue family as being driven to accomplish their goals and dreams. George parroted Marty's line that Jennifer parroted from Doc during the record label conversation: if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. The McFlys were originally negative loser types who didn't pursue dreams or gave them up. They had an unhappy, alcoholic, annoyed, tired acceptance of their family dynamic and reality. George as a teenaged writer wrote with no intention of publishing because he was afraid of embarrassment and rejection. At the end, you can tell George ing Marty's words plus punching Biff and getting Lorraine "the romantic way" changed his confidence and attitude. He reached for the stars and taught his kids the same idiom. It wasn't about money or status, it was about accomplishing your goals.
The only problem I had with how it ended is we never get to see Marty get a recording contract and a music career.
