Umm if I correctly the 1st films his friend is killed. In the second Bogomil is shot by the Alphabet killers/bank robbers but he didn't die.

Inspector Todd perished in the opening of 3rd film at the hands of the villain Ellis DeWalt. So umm....there was def skin in the game in all 3 films.
