I am in the masterpiece camp. It being hard to figure out who the hero is is exactly the point. I don’t think there is one. When I was watching it my gut reaction was that it was a 1920s film like Greed or Intolerance, with obvious knowledge to Fritz Lang’s Metropolis and Menzie’s (and Korda and HG Wells) Things to Come, but about 1970s NYC.
Note that those other films predicted dismal futures that came to . It looks like that may be the case in this. It certainly calls out Trump and the Murdochs.
Films that make people uncomfortable are a hard sell.
