There was no earthly reason for De Niro to play duel roles. They weren't twins or even related.

He didn't even change his voice much, you see him sat across from himself and both characters talk with his voice.

Tom Hardy did this with The Krays but they WERE twins, and Hardy put a lot of work into making them physically and vocally different.

De Niro ruined any chance this movie had by insisting on playing duel roles. Secondly, apart from Cosmo Jarvis, there's very few actors in main roles in their 20s or 30s.

As a result, you have lots of grey haired cliché 'gangster' characters who are boring to watch. Barry Levinson used to be a good director but he too seems past it. His direction is plodding and uninspired.

A waste of time, and a wasted opportunity to tell an interesting real life mob story. I cannot fathom what De Niro thought he was achieving here as an actor it seems like blind ego.

Warner Bros boss recently said they'll be shifting away from younger filmmakers and original stories, to IPs with existing fan bases.

If Warners needed an excuse to go that route, denying a new generation of filmmakers the opportunity to tell new stories, funding this dead on arrival Turkey knowing it'd lose money would have been one way to prove their point that 'art', 'actors' and 'filmmakers' simply aren't worth the risk.
