What made the original so special is that you got to feel the love of Eric and Shelley through Eric's eyes which made it more impactful and make the pain that Eric felt more real. Here we just have to generic teen fall in love and you don't get that connection that you had with the characters after they die like in the original.

The other problem came with the ending, in the original, Eric and Shelley have their happy ending because this was supposed to be a one off and their weren't suppose to get a sequel, so it made their love feel even real. Here the ending feel like it was made to do a sequel and it's hurting the movie instead of helping it.
