Pike on Talos could do and be things that he could NEVER do away from Talos, physiologically intact or not. Pike chose his fate KNOWING that by accepting it he would SAVE organic sentient life in the Alpha quadrant. He followed through with a messianic sacrifice without knowing at the time that Talos and Spock would engineer a rescue for his dire situation and his heroic arc depends on his following the path his actions have predetermined.
