See AllWhy Dune Part 2 Intentionally Made One Character Humorous Explained By Denis Villeneuve
Kal- the book is unfair to Chani by Paul choosing to marry someone else, regardless of her understanding and acceptance. That's fine because she has unconditional love, but THEN later while giving birth she dies while calling for Paul and he never shows up. It's the saddest thing, I never understood why Herbert wrote it. That doesn't mean it's okay to rewrite dune and portray Chani the way they do in Dune 2, she's just insufferable. She doesn't seem to love Paul or him or even consider that the prophecy is true. Denis let the women take over the script and it really showed.

The second movie took such a hard left turn that I can't even watch it after loving Denis's Dune part one. It followed the book so so well and I couldn't wait to see more Chani and Stilgar. Then he took their characters, threw them off a cliff and rewrote them completely. Stilgar is quirky, not a comedic crazy religious zealot. They ruined him for me and he's nothing like his character in the first, who was serious and stern but had a soft side. He was wise and cautious. This Stilgar was a mess and the audience actually laughed out loud at his lines, which I can't unhear. Chani was even worse!! She's nothing like her character in the book at all outside of the first movie. It's like an alternate universe Chani and it's not ok. Paul needs her to be his rock and believe in him and she's not at all. It was infuriating. It was like Denis let a woman rewrite his script. It's true the books were pretty unfair to the women, especially Chani, but that doesn't give you the right to write an alternate ending. This is basically Dune done in the style of Inglorious Bastards. So so upsetting and a huge waste of great actors. Especially because I was so happy that Anya was cast so perfectly, albeit too early and incorrectly plot wise. I'd have accepted that if everything else was normal. Even lady Jessica is ruined as some evil manipulative character all of the sudden instead of a loving mother. So many slaps in our faces.

In the second film there was nothing but sacrilege with every single character and plot. However the first Dune movie nailed it and only omitted unnecessary parts.
