It feels very attention seeking and trying to drive traffic and comments, which I have obliged on both. But agreed, it's a terrible take and poorly backed with actual information.
Magic: The Gathering's Commander Meddling Proves The Format Isn't Casual Anymore
These changes are actually keeping commander more casual. The cards being made into game changers take away from the casualness of commander.
I have been playing for over 30 years and commander for nearly 20 of them. The cards listed take over commander games and make them far more streamlined and much less casual. By carving them out and asg them a different status it allows those that wish to play very casually to do just that.
There is also art vs science on this approach. You can make a low power deck with a single higher powered card in it and it will not overall change the deck. By the numbers the deck will be a 3, by the true art of the deckbuilding it will be remain a 2.
There is a purpose for pregame conversations to discuss the type of game wished to be played to avoid have a bunch of casual players get steam rolled by someone that is more focused on winning.
While I am typically not an advocate for Wizards of the Coast and how they handle Magic the Gathering, this is something they are actually doing right.
