Julian May's Saga of the Pliocene Exiles is for me the best ever blend of fantasy and science fiction. I am surprised most people have never heard of it, as it is easily my most re-read series (and I loved LOTR as a kid).

All of the characters are fully created and differently flawed. The world building is second to none, and she created a universe of potential spin off series.
