I don't think this show has any intention of offering something new or nuanced. I'm not saying that it's good or that I personally like it, but this type of show is comfort food for a lot of people not seeking the highest level of wit and creativity. It's the same reason why sitcoms like Reba have had unusual levels of success on streaming, lots of people want casual TV with a familiar face for a level of nostalgia.
