PlayStation Showcase 2021 showed off brand-new gameplay of the intense beat-em-up Project Eve. The high-octane brawler brings to mind titles such as Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, as a sword-wielding female protagonist journeys through various exotic locales. With no release date in sight for Bayonetta 3, Japanese developer SHIFT UP could fill the intense action void with Project Eve.

Character action games such as Bayonetta and Nier: Automata have received a great deal of success in recent years. 2017's Nier: Automata, developed by PlatinumGames, brings players to a far future where androids and machines battle in a seemingly endless proxy war. The game's complex narrative, which requires multiple playthroughs to fully understand, received a great deal of praise from players upon release. The success of Nier: Automata has potentially paved the way for similar titles such as Project Eve.

A brand-new look at Project Eve's gameplay was shown at PlayStation Showcase 2021, giving gamers a better idea of what they can expect from the action title. The trailer shows off a number of gorgeous sci-fi locales, including a space station and an abandoned metropolis. The title's female protagonist, wielding a massive sword, must traverse these environments while fighting squid-like monsters. These creatures appear capable of possessing other beings, leading to a variety of enemy types being showcased in the impressively cinematic trailer.

With the great success of Nier: Automata, action fans are no doubt excited for a similar title to fill the void. The Bayonetta series is a similar and highly successful franchise, but unfortunately Bayonetta 3 was absent from E3 2021, to the disappointment of fans who've waited a long time for the sequel. The cause of the game's absence was reportedly due to the title not yet being ready for fans to see. Nintendo of America's senior marketing manager told fans that development of Bayonetta 3 is going well, but the action title was not quite ready to appear at E3 2021. The game was first revealed in 2017, and very little information has been shared about it since then.

The gameplay of Project Eve shown at the PlayStation Showcase 2021 portrays an exciting and fast-paced action title. Unique environments and disturbing enemy designs serve to give the release a very distinct identity, and combat looks to be extremely fast-paced. However, fans of titles such as Bayonetta and Nier: Automata will likely find a delightful familiarity in SHIFT UP's intense brawler when it releases in the future.
