Sony has announced that Cosmic Red and Midnight Black DualSense controllers for the PlayStation 5 will finally be released in June. The PS5 has only had a single DualSense controller color available since launch, with all owners having no options beyond a white system and black-and-white gamepads.
It has been difficult for Sony to keep PS5 units in stock, so many didn't expect alternate colors or editions for a while. It's possible to remove the plates on the PS5 and customize or paint them without damaging the system. It's also possible to buy colored gel cases for the existing DualSense controllers, though these can dampen the effectiveness of haptic .
PS5 owners will soon have two new color choices for their DualSense controllers. The existence of red and black controllers recently leaked online, but Sony has now officially revealed them. According to PlayStation Blog, Cosmic Red and Midnight Black DualSense controllers will be available from retailers starting next month, though no concrete release date was given. Sony also states that the date will vary by region. A trailer for both DualSense controller editions has been ed to the official PlayStation YouTube channel, showing the new gamepads off from multiple angles.
The Midnight Black controller has two shades of black along with a light grey, while the Cosmic Red's look is a mix of red and black. These colors were chosen to match the blue-and-white light that is always present on the controllers, as well as to match a "galaxy" theme tying the new colors in with the default white PS5 controller. The Midnight Black controller will be especially exciting to fans, as they've been asking for a black DualSense since the white gamepad was first revealed ahead of the console's design.
Sony is likely in no rush to release alternate editions of the PS5 system, as it's already struggling to keep the white ones in stock. The fact that the PS5's plates are detachable means that Sony doesn't have to release a whole new console for a new color scheme, though. It's possible that Sony will release Midnight Black and Cosmic Red plates for existing PS5 units in the near future, allowing players to match their system to their new controllers at a much lower cost than buying an entire new console. This could also explain why Sony has shut down sales of third-party plates with threats of legal action, as it could have plans to release its own line of colors for the system.
The Midnight Black and Cosmic Red DualSense controllers for PlayStation 5 will be released in June.
