Sony finally announced the release date (November 12) and price ($499) of the PlayStation 5, and with it a bevy of new games. From Final Fantasy XVI to Demon's Souls, Sony's new console has an impressive collection of exclusives. Most exciting for the release of any new console generation, though, are the launch titles.
During the PlayStation 5 showcase itself, the only launch title confirmed was Devil May Cry 5, which was a little disappointing for fans. However, inexplicably following the showcase, Sony then announced that a number of the titles shown off during the PS5 price and release date reveal show are actually releasing along with the launch of the PlayStation 5.
From PS4 classics to Spider-Man Miles Morales, there are an impressive number of launch titles for the PlayStation 5, and that's including only the confirmed titles. There are definitely others that could launch with the console or release soon after, such as Oddworld: Soulstorm, a game whose release date will be announced “very, very soon” according to an official Sony blog post. For now, here is the list of every confirmed title for PlayStation 5.
PS5 Launch Game: Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
DMC 5 Special Edition will launch digitally on November 12th for the PS5. The special edition adds Virgil as a playable character, turbo mode (which increases the game's speed by 1.2x), and a new difficulty called Legendary Dark Knight difficulty. Along with these new gameplay additions comes a number of new technical features. The game will include ray tracing for improved graphic fidelity, as well as an option to play the game at 120fps. DMC 5 Special Edition will cost $39.99 at launch.
PS5 Launch Game: SackBoy - A Big Adventure
SackBoy: A Big Adventure is the next game in the LittleBigPlanet series. Strangely, this game's release date was not announced in the trailer nor the PlayStation blog. Rather, Geoff Keighley confirmed the game's release day on Twitter. Developed by Sumo Digital, the game will be a 3D platformer instead of a 2.5D platformer like the original LittleBigPlanet titles, but it will still have creation tools. SackBoy: A Big Adventure launches on both the PS5 and PS4 on November 12.
PS5 Launch Game: Astro's Playroom
A platformer from Japan Studios, Astro's Playroom will be free and pre-installed on every PS5. The game follows the same ideals of the The Playroom, which was preloaded on the PS4 at launch. Unlike that game, however, which was just a collection of different kinds of mini-games, Astro's Playroom is a full on platformer with 4 levels.
PS5 Launch Game: Destruction AllStars
Made by Lucid Games, Destruction AllStars is a car combat game akin to Rocket League. However, unlike Rocket League, the various cars in Destruction AllStars will come decked out with super-powers. Like SackBoy: A Big Adventure, the announcement that Destruction AllStars will be released at launch for the PS5 came from Geoff Keighley on Twitter.
[Update 27/10/2020: Destruction AllStars has been delayed to Feb. 21]
PS5 Launch Game: Spider-Man Miles Morales & Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered
One of the biggest announcements of the show, Spider-Man Miles Morales, a standalone adventure akin to Uncharted: Lost Odyssey, will release the same day as the PS5. The game follows Miles as he comes into his own as a Spider-Man, deals with the fallout of his mother running for political office, and contends with the budding war between the Roxxon corporation and the Underground, a criminal army lead by the Tinkerer. It's also important to note that the game launches on the PS4 the same day as the PS5 and s a free next-gen upgrade. Spider-Man Miles Morales will cost $49.99.
Alongside Spider-Man Miles Morales, Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered will also launch with the PS5. The game will be included as a bonus with Spider-Man Miles Morales Ultimate Edition, which costs $69.99.
PS5 Launch Game: Demon's Souls
Bluepoint Game's remake of Demon Souls will be available on November 12 alongside the PS5. No simple remaster, the game rebuilds FromSoftware's 2009 classic from the ground up with new graphics and gameplay tweaks. However, Demon's Souls remains faithful to the original with the same design and the aesthetics all being inspired by the original concept art.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War does not launch the same day as the PS5, but the day after, on November 13, so its basically a launch title. The PS5 showcase showed players Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's first campaign mission, which deals with returning characters Alex Mason and Frank Woods tracking a high-value target involved in a hostage situation. Alongside the new campaign footage for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Raven announced that PS4 owners can play the multiplayer alpha starting on September 18.
Numerous PS4 Classics On PS5
Alongside the 7 confirmed launch titles, Sony also unveiled a new perk for PlayStation Plus : the PlayStation Plus Collection. When the PS5 launches, PlayStation Plus will have immediate access to 18 classic PS4 titles including the likes of Uncharted 4 and God of War.
Its been a long time coming, but Sony's official announcement of the PS5's launch hit hard. With a couple of big launch titles, free games, immediate access to PS4 classics, and some console exclusives on the horizon, Sony's PlayStation 5 cannot come soon enough.
