Sony may have waited last to reveal the price and release date of its next-gen console, the pre-orders for the PS5 went anything but smooth. Sony has been the butt of tons of memes and reaction posts online from frustrated gamers who struggled to get their hands on the PS5 during pre-orders, or at the very least, were confused as to where or how to purchase it.

Eric Lempel, the worldwide marketing head of PlayStation, originally assured gamers that the pre-orders wouldn’t catch anyone by surprise and that there would be ample notice. But on September 16th, following the Digital Showcase in which Sony confirmed the price and release date of the console, the company sent out a tweet confirming “PS5 pre-orders will be available starting as early as tomorrow at select retailers.” The tweet provided little to no information about how pre-orders would work or who the “select retailers” were.

As gamers tried to find any information available following Sony’s tweet, no one was prepared for what came next. Even though pre-orders weren’t supposed to open until September 17th, certain retailers began putting their listings up the night before. wouldn’t receive their PS5 console until after its release date. Needless to say, the PlayStation 5 pre-orders turned into a massive flop.

Thankfully, Sony was quick to issue an apology following the confusion. “Let’s be honest: PS5 pre-orders could have been smoother,” Sony stated in a tweet. “We truly apologize for that.” They also promised more PS5 consoles would be available for pre-order in the near future and that retailers would soon have further information. Despite the apology, however, many gamers are still rightfully frustrated about the PS5 pre-orders, especially folks who paid for their console but aren’t sure when they’ll see it. It’s led to some pretty hilarious, yet disgruntled, reactions online – here are the absolute best.

Gamers were clearly expecting much more from Sony, especially after the company assured players that they would be notified before PS5 pre-orders went live and then subsequently weren't. For the sake of the PlayStation 5’s success (and the sanity of the gaming community) hopefully things go smoother from here on out.
