After a long wait, people finally know the price and release date of the PlayStation 5. Sony recently unveiled new titles, gameplay footage, a price, and the release date for the next-gen console at the company's PS5 Showcase. However, the event gave no indication as to when exactly preorders would be happening.
Unlike the Xbox Series X price and release date announcement, the PS5 Showcase didn't end with details regarding when preorders would start. Understandably, many people are excited to get their hands on Sony's latest next-gen console. Thankfully, not long after the PS5 Showcase event the official PlayStation Twitter tweeted out that preorders for the PS5 would begin as early as tomorrow, September 17th, for some retailers. Then, not long after, that changed.
It shouldn't be a surprise for anyone who's been following along with the PlayStation 5. From the very beginning, Sony's big PS5 announcement has been the subject of leaks, rumors, and even curtailing from the Xbox Series X on the 25th Anniversary of the original PlayStation. Now, some retailers appear to be opening up preorders ahead of schedule, although it's unclear at the moment exactly who.
How PS5 Pre-Orders Work
According to Sony, the PlayStation 5 will be available for preorder from select retailers starting tomorrow. However, the latest news indicates preorders could begin today. Earlier today, a leak from a French retailer led to a lot of speculation the PS5 would be available for preorder after the PS5 Showcase ended. So far, that hasn't happened, but it doesn't mean preorders won't go up sometime in the next few hours. Geoff Keighley also announced on Twitter that retailers including Walmart and GameStop would be making stock available early. Walmart was the first site confirmed to have taken preorders for the PS5, which sold out quickly after being made available.
People eager to get their hands on a PS5 should expect to find preorders available at major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy, but preorders could go up at different times based on a person's country or region. Keeping an eye on the official social media s for PlayStation and Sony are a pretty sure bet as well, especially since the company has assured consumers it will make an announcement before PS5 preorders go live. Even if some retailers go live with preorders tonight, others will surely wait until tomorrow, so there should be plenty of time to get one. Sony has assured consumers there aren't PS5 shortage issues, but take that with a grain of salt.
While some online stores may post PS5 preorders tonight, officially that won't happen until tomorrow. According to Sony, the next-gen console should be available from multiple select retailers tomorrow, with additional preorders opening up at all major retailers soon after. This post will be updated as soon as the first few PlayStation 5 preorders officially go live.
