PlayStation VR headset may receive a next-gen successor. Sony's current virtual reality headset was released back in 2016, and it continues to receive to this day. PSVR has achieved success, helping to further the popularity of virtual reality gaming, selling 5 million units as of last year.
Sony has recently assured gamers that the current PSVR headset will be compatible with the PlayStation 5, suggesting that the current model will continue being ed for some time. The PlayStation 4 devices will also be required to use PSVR on PlayStation 5, rather than their next-gen equivalents. Players will need a PS4 Camera and a DualShock 4 or PS Move controller to use the PSVR, with the PS5 HD Camera and DualSense controller be incompatible.
Now a recent interview with Sony Senior Vice President Hideaki Nishino, translated from Japanese by Twitter Nibellion, suggests that a next-gen replacement for the PSVR may be in the works. Talking about Sony's commitment to ing the current headset, Nishino stated that the PS5 will further enhance the virtual reality gaming experience. However, he goes on to say that he expects, "the PS5 to have a VR experience that is appropriate for the PS5." He refuses to comment further, suggesting that there are plans that Sony is not yet ready to discuss publicly.
While Sony seems comfortable with continuing for the PSVR, there are some early hints that a next-gen successor is on the way. Back in September Sony filed a patent for what appears to be a PSVR is not actually compatible with PlayStation 5 games, only with PlayStation 4 games being played on the next-gen console. This adds credence to the theory that the PS5 will be receiving its own PSVR equipment.
Sony has shown high regard for virtual reality gaming, having brought a respectable catalog of VR-specific games to PS4. Now as gaming moves into the next generation, it seems logical that a PSVR2 would at least be discussed. With more powerful hardware to work with and a growing interest in virtual reality, it's probably only a matter of time before a new PlayStation headset is brought to the public.
