If the PlayStation 5 looks familiar, it might be because of its uncanny similarity to a Minecraft designer's building, and the amusing comparison has been making the rounds across social media. This week, the PlayStation 5 was finally formally unveiled, and audiences are particularly enamored with the unique design of Sony's next-gen console. With its curved edges and two-toned design, it's drawn comparisons to a WiFi router thanks to the sassy internet pundits who find ways to turn everything into a meme.
Not everything is sunshine and rainbows with the PlayStation 5, however. Some people are taken aback by the system's massive size, while others remain skeptical of how the console will handle backwards compatibility. Even so, the extensive look given to many next-gen titles has the gaming public eagerly awaiting how the next-gen console wars play out between Sony's machine and its closest competitor, Microsoft's Xbox Series X. The Xbox contrasts with the PlayStation due to its more boxy, utilitarian design that resembles a mini fridge at first glance.
While seemingly unique, the "encased" design of the PlayStation 5 has a distinct look to it, not unlike any number of real life big city skyscrapers. Beyond that, it has an eerily similar design to a Minecraft builder's in-game- building. Reddit Egeau, who frequently posts his designs on various Minecraft architecture boards on Reddit, pointed out the similarity with the tongue-in-cheek remark, "I feel like my build has been ripped off."
Indeed, the similarities are uncanny, from the general shape of the building to the two armor-like plates surrounding the central structure. Both Egeau's building and the PlayStation 5 are gorgeous, futuristic-looking structures with a striking, instantly recognizable silhouette. Of course, there are plenty of differences that keep this from being a legitimate rip-off, but the similarities are noteworthy and good for a laugh, at the very least.
In any event, this good-natured controversy is a testament to the degree of critical acclaim. At this point, a PlayStation 5 version of Minecraft is all but assured. Nothing has been announced, but it's a sure bet. At the very least, the PlayStation 4 version of Mojang's opus will surely be backwards compatible on Sony's next-gen system.
