When Psychonauts 2 has been a long time coming, with over five years having ed since it was first announced. However, its release date is now tantalizingly close, and more news is gradually being revealed about the platformer.

The first game in the Psychonauts series was met with an incredible response from fans. Its hallucinogenic gameplay offered some of the most mind-bending scenes yet to be experienced on consoles. Players took control of Rasputin (aka Raz) as he attempted to unfurl the mysteries at a summer camp for those with psychic powers. The game was universally well-received, however, its poor sales led to financial losses for those involved in its production. Despite this, it continued to develop a cult following and an ensuing crowdfunding campaign from writer Tim Schafer led to production on Psychonauts 2 being announced at the 2015 Game Awards.

And now, for those who are excited to get their hands on Psychonauts 2 when it releases but were unsure that they would be able to survive psychedelic conflicts that may be presented to them, there is great news. Video game developer Double Fine has confirmed on Twitter that Psychonauts 2 will include an invincibility mode when it releases. With this mode enabled, no matter how trippy and bizarre things get, players will be able to endure whatever comes their way and move forward with the game’s story.

There are many people out there who enjoy playing a game on as hard a difficulty level as is readily available to them, and this option will still be there with Psychonauts 2. After all, the challenge, and then overcoming a said challenge, can offer gamers an immense thrill and sense of achievement. However, many want their gameplay experiences to be less of an onslaught of rock-hard enemies and more of an easy-going escape for a couple of hours at the end of a long day.

Both ways of playing a game, be it Psychonauts 2 or any other title, are totally acceptable, and Double Fine acknowledges this. Following on from its tweet sharing the news about Psychonauts 2’s invincibility mode, the developer went on to say that “all people should be able to enjoy games” and that at the end of the day the teams who worked on the game just want its players “to have fun, to laugh, to experience a story that affects you. On whatever you want.” And really, when it comes to video games, as long as people are enjoying the journey that they are being taken on, that is all that matters.
