Psylocke #1 Gives the X-Men Hero a New Path for Her Series
Alyssa Wong and Vincenzo Carratù
Debuting in 1993's X-Men #17, Kwannon was originally trained to be an assassin from birth within The Hand, alongside her psionic and telepathic powers. Along the way, she swapped bodies with Betsy Braddock after falling into a coma. While Betsy played hero as Psylocke in Kwannon's body, Kwannon forged her own path in Betsy's body as Revanche. In more recent years, the two characters have swapped to their original places, with Kwannon officially becoming the second Psylocke while Betsy Braddock became Captain Britain.
problematic one, according to Deadpool), Psylocke has a shot at carving out a whole new path for herself with a new solo series that asserts herself as the X-Men's number one problem solver. Even if she doesn't work with the rest of the team in Jed MacKay's X-Men, painting her as someone Cyclops and co. call on for jobs too dirty for them immediately puts her in a position where she's depended on, filling out a role no one else on the X-Men can, but everyone on the X-Men respects.
Psylocke Series Will Challenge The Title Character's Hero Status
Doing So May Bolster Her Further Into Heroism
Writer Alyssa Wong had this to say about tackling the character of Psylocke:
Everything in her history points her to the path of a villain. Her background is so full of tragedy—so why does she choose to be a hero? This is a dark emotional character story. But it will also be a ton of fun as well. I’m excited to do something super dark.
What Wong promises is a dark introspection of Psylocke and her decision to become a hero. As they mention, Psylocke has experienced enough tragedy and darkness in her past to warrant a villain turn, yet she chooses to be a hero and an X-Man. Her series will examine the darkness in Psylocke's life, but by pointing out how she chooses to be with the X-Men in spite of that darkness, it only makes her out to be a bigger hero.
Psylocke #1 will be available November 13 from Marvel Comics.
