A new era for the Punisher is on the horizon and, to mark the occasion, he's replacing his standard skull logo with a more stylized version. There's been a lot of real-world discussion over Frank Castle retiring his old symbol and now that he's ing the Hand, it's seemingly the perfect time to adopt a new image. But what exactly does this new symbol mean and how will it relate to the Punisher's next journey?

Since his creation by Gerry Conway, John Romita Sr, and Ross Andru, Frank Castle has been waging a one-man war on crime utilizing methods not endorsed by the majority of heroes in the Marvel Universe. Despite his lack of in-world popularity, the Punisher remains a fan-favorite and his skull iconography is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable superhero logos. While some have called for the logo to be retired permanently, it seems the Punisher is getting an altered version of his skull to symbolize the growth he's about to undergo.

In a recent announcement by Marvel, Jason Aaron, Jesús Saiz, Paul Azaceta, and Dave Stewart will be working on a new 13-issue miniseries that will examine Frank Castle during a new "definitive" chapter of his life. As a part of this new path the Punisher is on, he's making some drastic changes like trading in his guns for swords and allying himself with ninja clan the Hand. Frank will have an important role to play as the preview notes that Castle will serve the Beast, the Hand's demonic figure of worship. Now in the employ of a mythological monster, the image emblazoned on the Punisher's chest has been changed to give his symbol a more historical and relevant meaning.

New Punisher Series

It's been pointed out by fans and critics of the change that the Punisher's skull has been modified to look like an oni, a mythical Japanese demon. Historically, onis have been murderous figures, and stories have depicted them as creatures to fear. Modern takes on the oni are a bit more kind, viewing them as protective figures to ward away bad luck. The duality of the oni is a good fit for someone like Frank who has been seen as both a terrifying figure with violent impulses but also a force to fight against the darkness of the world. Castle's traditional skull logo has come under fire in recent years for its appropriation that even Punisher co-creator Gerry Conway has called out publicly. The new oni-inspired image could help Frank break away from real-life controversy while retaining a symbol that communicates the nature of his mission.

While fans may miss the usual skull Castle has worn for decades, his new logo effectively serves the same purpose. Anyone facing the Punisher's new symbol should know that he is still here to use violent measures to eliminate evil from the world.
