Puss in Boots: The Last Wish continues its box office domination, as it blows past major blockbuster releases. The sequel to 2011's Puss in Boots and a spin-off of the Shrek franchise, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish follows Puss in Boots and his allies as he tries to recover his first eight lives. Unfortunately, along the way, he infuriates the living embodiment of Death and needs to face off against the reaper to survive.

Since its release, Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru reports that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has sured Black Adam at the box office and is setting up to Dune and The Eternals.

While its Rotten Tomatoes score is higher, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish still hasn't beaten the original Puss in Boots at the box office, which sits a massive $554 million global take. Still, the fact that the movie is rolling past blockbuster superhero movies is impressive and bodes well for the rest of the run.

As a spin-off of Shrek 2, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish being so successful could be a further indication to the studio that audiences are still interested in the Shrek universe. While Dreamworks announced Shrek 5 in 2016, progress on the project appears to have stalled and its future seems uncertain. After so many years, it may be too late for Shrek 5.

While the Puss in Boots franchise benefits from the simple concept of a cat with a flare for the dramatic, the Shrek world has already been through four iterations. Originally slated to release in September 2022, it may have been too many years since the project was first announced for it to build up anticipation once again. If the project is aimed at younger audiences, they may not even be aware of the existence of Shrek.

Yet Puss in Boots: The Last Wish came over a decade after the original Puss in Boots and is still highly successful. Since Antonio Banderas is already hinting at Shrek 5, the project could relatively be right around the corner. With Puss in Boots: The Last Wish continuing to destroy its competition, the future looks bright for the Shrek universe as a whole.
