CBS has renewed show, starring Queen Latifah, has become a big success for the network, and its blend of action, crime, and vigilante violence has seemingly made it a hit with viewers. Season 1, consisting of 10 episodes, debuted on CBS back in February 2021, concluding on May 23 of the same year. The second season of 18 episodes premiered in October 2021, and the final 2 episodes will air in the coming weeks.
Reports from THR reveal that CBS has renewed the show through the 2023/24 television season, and Latifah will continue her role as a former CIA agent who acts as a guardian angel for those in need. However, co-star Chris Noth will not return after being fired for a slew of misconduct allegations. The series is a reboot of the 1980s TV show of the same name, as well as the 2014 Denzel Washington movie adaptation directed by Antoine Fuqua. CBS executive Thom Sherman seemed pleased with the move, and you can read the 52 year-old's comments on the decision below:
“The Equalizer continues to pack a powerful punch on Sunday nights, and we’re thrilled to have it back for two more seasons. The success of The Equalizer is due to the sum of its parts — an outstanding cast led by the superb Queen Latifah, plus the exceptional creative team that has continued to evolve their storytelling with a compelling mix of everyday justice, family dynamics and real-world issues that connect and resonate with audiences.”
In an era where streaming platforms are dominant, and the battle for audiences is more fierce than ever, it makes sense for networks to renew shows they know will get viewers in front of screens, and clearly The Equalizer is a safe choice for CBS. Universal Pictures will continue to produce the series, alongside CBS Studios, while executive producers Latifah, Andrew Marlowe, Terri Edda Miller, John Davis, John Fox, and Debra Martin Chase are expected to remain on board as well.
