The Movie Critic’s Cancelation Gives Hopes For Kill Bill 3 Being Tarantino’s Final Movie
The Movie Critic’s Cancellation Makes Way For Other Exciting Possibilities
Reasons for Tarantino's deciding not to make The Movie Critic weren’t revealed, but this opens up various possibilities for his next and supposedly final movie. Tarantino has a long list of unrealized projects, going from original stories like a 1930s gangster film to adaptations of comic books and novels, and even sequels to some of his works. In the latter category, the only project that was often teased for years and that the audience showed a lot of interest and in was a third Kill Bill movie.
Both Kill Bill movies were a critical and commercial success, and Tarantino revealed he had plans to make more of them.
Tarantino has explored different genres in his movies, and in 2003, he brought his own take on martial arts movies with Kill Bill. Starring Uma Thurman as the Bride, a former assassin, Kill Bill follows her on a revenge mission against her former colleagues, the Deadly Viper assassination squad, and their leader, Bill (David Carradine), who was also her lover. The pregnant Bride was attacked by the Vipers and Bill at her wedding rehearsal and spent years in a coma. When The Bride awoke, and believing her child to be dead, she set out on a relentless and violent revenge mission.
The following year, the second part, simply titled Kill Bill: Volume 2, was released, which continued the Bride’s mission and its conclusion after she finally fulfilled the movie’s title. Both Kill Bill movies were a critical and commercial success, and Tarantino revealed he had plans to make more of them, thinking of it as his “Dollars Trilogy”. Kill Bill 3 has been teased since 2004 and was, at some point, expected to be Tarantino’s final movie – and with The Movie Critic out of the way, there’s hope for it finally becoming a reality.
What Tarantino Has Said About Kill Bill 3
Kill Bill 3 Has Been Teased Too Many Times
Kill Bill 3 would have seen Sofie Fatale (Julie Dreyfus) inheriting all of Bill’s money and raising Nikki, Vernita Green’s (Vivica A. Fox) daughter.
At some point, Tarantino said he planned on making a Kill Bill movie every 10 years, and he already had the concept of what happened next (via Kill Bill 3 would have seen Sofie Fatale (Julie Dreyfus) inheriting all of Bill’s money and raising Nikki, Vernita Green’s (Vivica A. Fox) daughter who saw the Bride kill her mother in her kitchen, and whom the Bride told that, if she wanted revenge in the future, she could do it. Nikki would have taken the Bride’s word and gone after her, as she definitely deserved her revenge as much as the Bride deserved hers.
In 2021, he shared that Kill Bill 3 would take place 20 years after the first two movies and would follow the Bride/Beatrix and her daughter, B.B.
After that, Tarantino often teased Kill Bill 3, saying it would be his ninth film and would be released in 2014 (via Bloody Disgusting), but also showing some doubt about it at certain points. In 2021, he shared that Kill Bill 3 would take place 20 years after the first two movies and would follow the Bride/Beatrix and her daughter, B.B., as they are forced to go on the run. However, that same year, Tarantino shared that his reluctance to make more Kill Bill movies was due to the fatigue he endured while making the first two (via The Playlist).
In 2023, Tarantino said he didn’t see Kill Bill 3 happening and that he was focused on his next film about a film critic. However, Tarantino has previously abandoned a project only to pick it up later. The Hateful Eight almost didn’t happen after the script was leaked and Tarantino decided to drop the project, only to return to it, rewrite it, and finally make it happen. With that in mind, Kill Bill 3 could not be entirely off the table, though the same can be said about The Movie Critic.
Why Kill Bill 3 Might Still Not Be Tarantino’s Final Movie If It Happens
Tarantino Has A Different Way Of Counting His Movies
Tarantino counts both Kill Bill movies as one, so following that logic, Kill Bill 3 would be part of that same package.
If Kill Bill 3 finally happens, it’s likely it won’t be Tarantino’s final movie. Tarantino has already made 10 movies, with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood being the 10th, but the way Tarantino counts his movies completely changes this. Tarantino counts both Kill Bill movies as one, so following that logic, Kill Bill 3 would be part of that same package, thus not counting as his 10th and final movie.
This would still leave room for one more movie, making it a win/win situation for the audience and Tarantino. The future of Kill Bill 3 continues to be unknown, but now so is that of Quentin Tarantino’s 10th and final movie.
