Warning: Spoilers ahead for A Quiet Place Part II.

A Quiet Place Part II kicked off a new journey for the family that saw them meeting up with a familiar face, separated for the first time, and continuously battling the alien monsters who track people by sound.

The sequel takes place over the course of a few days and, with the original film so focused on the Abbott family, A Quiet Place Part II introduced a handful of new characters, including Cillian Murphy's Emmett, Lee’s old friend from before the monsters attacked and whom ed Regan on her journey to find other survivors. The film ended abruptly and on somewhat of a cliffhanger, which was likely a setup for another installment in the horror franchise.

Like with any sequel, A Quiet Place Part II worked in a few new subplots and challenges the characters had to face, but there were certain moments that probably left viewers wondering about. Here are the biggest unanswered questions from the movie.

Who Really Were The People On The Marina?

Cillian Murphy as Emmett in a scene from A Quiet Place Part II.

A Quiet Place Part II introduced a plethora of new characters outside of the Abbott family, including other survivors like the marina people. When Emmett and Regan got to the dock, in their attempt to take a boat out to the island, they were met with some feral people. Marina Man and a young girl darted across the dock and attempted to kill Emmett, a chilling change from the alien creatures who stalked the sounds their prey made. What the sequel fails to do, however, is expand upon who these people are and how they became so vicious. It’s been over a year and three months since the creatures landed on Earth. That means the marina people changed their behavior in a short period of time and it’s unclear why exactly they’re okay with seemingly hunting other humans instead of the creatures themselves.

What is their purpose? Are they sacrificing people to the alien monsters? And how would they even benefit from it when the monsters themselves don’t cooperate or negotiate with humans? The movie spends very little time with them, so the audience may never really know their identities and backstories. Marina Man and the others had fashioned themselves a few traps and noise makers, so Emmett and Regan don’t seem to be the only people they’ve crossed paths with. But very little is known about how they operate and why they even got this way to begin with. They did intend to kill Emmett, but not Regan, which is a curious turn of events, but the reasons behind why they did anything in the sequel remain murky. Perhaps their backstory could be further explored in a potential A Quiet Place 3

How Did Lee Know To Keep Quiet When The Monsters Arrived?

A Quiet Place

The sequel featured a flashback to Day 1 of the aliens arriving on Earth. Lee and his family are at Marcus’ baseball game when they see a meteor falling from the sky. It isn’t long before they and the townspeople are running for their lives. While everyone else screams, cowers, or attempts to drive away to safety, Lee seems to know that the monstrous creatures can track by sound. However, there isn’t anything that gives this information away at first.

There is utter chaos all throughout the town, with everyone busy trying to save themselves from being attacked. Naturally, one would hide out from a threat like the ones the monsters pose. When everyone is out of sight and taking cover behind counters and cars, Lee’s first instinct in A Quiet Place Part II is to somehow understand the monsters are drawn to sound on the first day of their arrival. The audience knows the characters eventually figure that out, but in a town already full of noise — people screaming, running, cars driving or crashing — it's a bit hard to believe that Lee already knew what everyone didn't regarding the monsters.

Why Did The Monster On The Boat Not Attack Earlier?

A closeuip of one of the aliens in A Quiet Place

The monsters have been obviously drawn to sound and that doesn't change in A Quiet Place Part II. Emmett and Regan think they’re in the clear when they arrive at the island, a refuge where survivors fled after the creatures’ arrival on Earth. However, Emmett doesn’t discover that one of the monsters stowed away in the boat until the next day. If the creature was already inside, why didn’t it bother attacking the islanders when they were talking, playing, and making a ton of noise prior to its breakout? They weren’t trying to be quiet considering they knew it was safe, so the alien creature could have heard them at any point and attacked. There was no reason to wait until the next day and it felt more like a plot convenience to break for some brief exposition before picking back up with the action.

Why Did The Island People Not Broadcast The Monsters Couldn’t Swim?

Quiet Place 2 Survivors Map

In A Quiet Place Part II, the Man on the Island told Emmett that he and the others survived by hopping aboard a few boats and heading to the island after discovering that the monsters couldn’t swim. Since then, they’ve been broadcasting the song “Beyond the Sea” to telegraph their existence to other survivors. The song being replayed is what alerted Regan to their location, which benefited her and her family. However, considering they had the use of a radio station, it might have been more pertinent to announce that the monsters couldn’t swim and other such useful information to others out there.

After all, it’s not like the monsters could understand their words anyway and, if those on the island wanted others to know they weren’t alone, giving them pointers on survival tactics may have worked in their favor. Similar to how Regan used the microphone to amplify the in tandem with her cochlear implants, the radio station could have been utilized better to communicate on a larger scale, which would have been helpful to the Abbotts and whoever else was still out there. What’s more, if Lee was trying to send out messages via Morse code in A Quiet Place, it makes no sense that they wouldn’t have responded to him before now.

Is Djimon Hounsou’s Character Still Alive?

Quiet Place 2 Emmett and Man on the Island together

Djimon Hounsou’s character, known only as Man on the Island, drove the car to the radio station with Regan and Emmett in a bid to draw the creature away from everyone else. However, he was dragged away by the monster upon arrival. But, the monster was only seen clawing at his leg and he could have definitely fought the creature offscreen. The scene itself suggests that he could still be alive. A Quiet Place Part II surprisingly had no major deaths and Hounsou is too big an actor to hire him for such a minor role before killing off his character. With the sequel setting up a potential third film, it’s possible the nameless island man will play a bigger role in A Quiet Place 3

Why Was The Military Defeated So Quickly?

This is a lingering question leftover from A Quiet Place, in which a newspaper headline stated the U.S. military was no more and could no longer defend people or attack the monsters. It’s especially puzzling now that A Quiet Place Part II revealed the monsters had already dropped in on another country and attacked before parts of the meteor landed in upstate New York. Considering the U.S. had a head start with regards to the aliens’ arrival and that they had access to weapons, planes, ships, and more, it doesn’t make sense that the military was wiped out so easily or that none of them are apparently left.
