Despite their differences, Deadline reports that the two movies are in tight competition. A Quiet Place debuted to a $53 million take on the weekend, which marks a franchise record. Its competition earned between $56-57 million in its third weekend, which is about where it was projected on Saturday. As the two battle for the top spot at the box office, it seems that the new Quiet Place movie will have to settle for second place in its debut weekend, while still celebrating the major feat.

With Despicable Me 4 entering the box office next week, it needs to bring in a strong performance to ensure that it keeps up its momentum through the July 4 weekend. It has already earned $469.3 million domestically and $545 million internationally, making for an incredible worldwide total of over $1 billion in just three weeks.

While it only managed to take the second-best slot, Quiet Place still brought in an extremely respectable margin. In a surprising disappointment, Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One rounds out the top three with a $4.1 million take on Friday. Horizon is expected to end the weekend with just $11 million, which is far from reaching the massive takes of the top two. It was followed by Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which Horizon only just managed to defeat, and then by Kalki 2898 AD, an Indian movie. After the top 5, many of last week's top movies found their places weakened this weekend. With two debuts in Horizon and A Quiet Place, everything else was shifted, besides Inside Out. The Bikeriders debuted last weekend but just fell from third to sixth. Garfield Movie and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes fell out of the top 5 into seventh and eighth place. IF disappeared completely, while Bad Boys: Ride or Die managed to hold from second to fourth. As Inside Out 2 and Day One battle it out, the rest of the box office is lying relatively low.

Day One's opening weekend saw the highest-grossing opening day total in the history of the Quiet Place franchise. The previous two movies grossed under $20 million domestically, and the franchise has been trending with every iteration. However, the first movie has the highest overall total, despite the lowest opening-day take in franchise history. While it's too soon to tell whether the prequel can break the overall total in the coming weeks, especially with the competition, the movie's current global total of $99 million puts it in a good position. Despite not winning the box office battle against Inside Out 2, it is still impressive that a horror movie managed such tight competition against the family-oriented sequel, considering its relatively niche audience. It also managed to beat expectations, having been projected to earn $40 million to $50 million, which would put it in line with other Quiet Place offerings. By beating that total, the franchise proved that it is still capable of growth.
