According to Creative Director Patrik Méthé, Ubisoft re-revealed the next Rainbow Six entry as Extraction during E3 2021.
The science-fiction spin will see the long-running Tom Clancy franchise enter new territory, ditching the grounded nature of the series in favor of something more alien. Of course, actual aliens sit front and center, as elite Operators will band together in an effort to infiltrate containment zones filled to the brim with an ever-changing foreign threat. Furthermore, the PvE action in Extraction opens the door to gameplay possibilities that Siege's PvP-based systems can't explore. Not everything is fresh this time around, however, evidenced by the return of Siege operators such as Nomad and Hibana. But fans need not worry about one tactical adventure taking precedent over the other.
Speaking with GameSpot, Extraction's Creative Director Patrik Méthé expressed confidence in its ability to build and sustain an audience of its own. Because Extraction and Siege offer two disparate experiences, the new title shouldn't steal its predecessor's player-base. Méthé told the publication,
"They're both very different games offering their own challenges and pacing so there's no worry in that regard, quite the opposite in fact. The way [Extraction] is built in its PvE nature - we're confident that it will appeal to a wide variety of players from both sides."
Siege fans who attempt to "push [Extraction] to its maximum level" will find a challenge on par with or even greater than that of the ever-evolving 2015 shooter. The team at Ubisoft Montréal also expects Extraction to attract players who've never given Siege a chance. As such, Rainbow Six newcomers will be met with a tactical experience that demands they regularly improve and hone their skills to secure mission success. According to Méthé, "communication and teamwork will be even more essential for these players."
It remains to be seen whether the development crew's predictions about Extraction's and Siege's ability to co-exist will prove true. But, as Méthé noted, the two are different enough to potentially target separate audiences.
Players who've grown accustomed to Siege's tactical qualities have something else to look forward to, as well. Recently, Mythic Games launched a Kickstarter for 6: Siege - The Board Game - a tabletop adaptation of the hit shooter. The project reached its $100,000 funding goal in a matter of hours and, as of writing, nearly 6,000 powers have pledged over $840,000 of . Should all go according to plan, the board game should ship in June 2022.
Rainbow Six Siege is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S; Rainbow Six Extraction comes to the same platforms later this year on September 16.
