The tight narrative of Red Dead Redemption 2 cleverly sets up the ending with moments of foreshadowing that later come to fruition. Both the gang's disintegration and Dutch's growing insanity are subtly hinted at much earlier in the game, with one key moment being in a late-night conversation around the campfire.

Dutch is one of the most charismatic characters in Red Dead Redemption 2 who manages to lead a group of outlaws into doing countless reckless heists. The man is a master at talking and often performs speeches to convince the gang to put their faith in him and his plans. Although Dutch may have good intentions and wishes to protect the gang, he has slowly changed after the disaster in Blackwater, becoming more ruthless and paranoid. Dutch's arrogance and delusion eventually cause the gang to perform the worst plan in RDR2, where they try to rob a bank in Saint-Denis, ultimately causing the tragic deaths of Hosea and Lenny.

Dutch Shows His Dark Side To Uncle In Red Dead Redemption 2

YouTuber Point Zero has shared a video containing a late-night camp conversation where players can see Uncle’s wisdom and one of the first hints of Dutch’s madness in Red Dead Redemption 2. Uncle’s constant doubts offend Dutch so much that the leader plainly says that he wants to kill the old man. Although the two characters soon brush it off as a joke, it is clear that Dutch means every word he says. The short interaction hints at how Dutch expects total obedience from his men and will not hesitate to eliminate anyone he deems a traitor.

RDR2's Conversation Hints At Dutch's Biggest Character Flaw

The conversation perfectly encapsulates Dutch’s descent into evil in RDR2 because similar interactions constantly repeat across the story. Several gang try to caution Dutch about his risky plans, but the man refuses to listen, believing he is more intelligent than others. Instead of accepting criticism, Dutch accuses those questioning his words as naysayers who have lost faith in him. Even when everything has fallen apart, Dutch still cannot accept responsibility and continues to believe that the lack of trust from his men is the reason behind the gang’s disintegration.

The exchange between Uncle and Dutch also mirrors numerous interactions between Arthur and the leader. Arthur constantly questions Dutch's judgments after he becomes disillusioned with the man's empty promises that never come true. On the other hand, Dutch, who cannot accept anything less than complete obedience, gradually prefers Micah. Sadly, everything culminates with Dutch betraying Arthur in RDR2 by trusting Micah’s words over his adopted son’s. Red Dead Redemption 2 is filled with various hints about the game’s ending, but the best foreshadowing is a late-night conversation between Uncle and Dutch which clearly foreshadows Dutch’s madness.
