Warning! This article contains spoilers for Reacher season 3's episodes 1, 2, & 3.

Without wasting time, original Lee Child Jack Reacher books, Reacher is often portrayed as a solitary figure who finds himself in a new setting in every installment and rarely runs into people from his past.

As seen in Reacher season 2, however, the Prime Video show does not shy away from drifting a little away from its source material. It not only marks Finlay's return in a small capacity but also paves the way for other character cameos in the future. Instead of treading the same path as its predecessor, though, Reacher season 3 does not take long to confirm that it will not feature figures from Jack Reacher's past. This development almost completely rules out Roscoe or any other character's return in the third installment.

Reacher Refusing To Let Neagley Help Rules Out Calling In Other Friends

In Reacher season 3's episodes 1, 2, and 3, Jack Reacher reaches out to Neagley, hoping she can help him uncover some details and criminal records surrounding the people he is investigating. However, when Neagley asks for his whereabouts and tries to learn more about the case he is working on, he maintains significant distance between himself and her. He does this because he realizes that the people he is dealing with are far more dangerous than the ones they have previously encountered.

He eventually tells Neagley that his goal is to take down former Military Intelligence officer Francis Xavier Quinn. This revelation catches Neagley off-guard because she, too, realizes the high stakes of Reacher's mission. To her dismay, Reacher still refuses to put her life in danger after knowing what Quinn did to one of his former partners from the military police. Given how Reacher did not think twice before reaching out to Neagley for help in season 1's ending moments, it is surprising that he ensures she does not get too involved in his season 3 mission.

Since Neagley has always been Reacher's go-to person for help, her hinted absence almost confirms that Reacher will not even consider getting Roscoe, Finlay, or the 110th Special Investigators involved.

The Alan Ritchson character has never underestimated Neagley's abilities as an investigator and has also often acknowledged how she is smarter than him. The fact that he still wants to keep her out of his ongoing season 3 investigation endeavor establishes that he does not want to get anyone else involved because of how perilous things could get once he encounters Quinn. Since Neagley has always been Reacher's go-to person for help, her hinted absence almost confirms that Reacher will not even consider getting Roscoe, Finlay, or the 110th Special Investigators involved.

Roscoe & Other Reacher Allies Don't Neatly Fit Into Persuader's Story

Reacher's Season 2 Mission Is Quite Personal & Incredibly Dangerous

Reacher is involved in a covert mission in season 3, where one misstep could either prove fatal or land him in serious trouble. Owing to this, even though he can seek help from his former teammates and allies, he cannot do it without maintaining some distance to ensure their safety and the secrecy of his operation. Although Reacher collaborates with DEA agents during his season 3 crime-solving endeavor, even the agents are forced to operate from a distance while leaving all the heavy lifting to Jack Reacher.

Neagley does not show up in Lee Child's Persuader, but Reacher season 3 features her in a small capacity.

Finlay's return fit right into Reacher season 2's narrative because the titular character and his team's mission to take down Langston and his crew was not too confidential. In season 3, however, Reacher himself seems to have little wiggle room because he is expected to work as an informant from the shadows. He cannot even make private phone calls without raising the alarm, let alone meet with anyone face-to-face without drawing unwanted attention from the people he secretly works against. This almost makes it impossible for Reacher season 3 to involve Roscoe or Reacher's other former allies.

Reacher Season 4 Should Bring Back Familiar Characters If Season 3 Doesn't

The Show Must Strike The Right Balance Between Jack Reacher's Solo & Team Missions

Serinda Swan as Karla Dixon, Shaun Sipos as David O'Donnell, Maria Sten as s Neagley, and Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher in Amazon's Reacher

Given how Reacher season 1 is often touted as the superior installment in the series compared to season 2, the show would benefit from repeating its formula and featuring more solo Jack Reacher narratives. However, at the same time, to maintain some semblance of continuity, Reacher should also bring back familiar faces in season 4 if season 3 builds a solitary storyline for the character. As seen in the original books, Jack Reacher is at his best when he works as a lone wolf and combines his brain and brawn to take down bad guys.

Lee Child Jack Reacher book series

The show risks diminishing the impact of his investigative prowess every time Jack Reacher collaborates with people like Neagley, Dixon, and O'Donnell, who are almost as competent as him. However, at the same time, reinstating figures from Reacher's past is also important for the series because it gives viewers more elements to look forward to and also bridges the gap between separate seasons. Although it would not make sense for Reacher's future seasons to drift too far from the original books, they can still take some creative liberties by featuring occasional appearances of familiar characters.
