What's Different About The Rebel Moon Director's Cuts?

The Zack Snyder Movies Feature Several Major Changes

The Rebel Moon director's cuts were promised before the first movie was even released, but there are some substantial differences that can be expected in the new versions. The first, and perhaps most major, is that both titles will now be rated R as opposed to their original PG-13 cuts. This will include the addition of more violent material as well as sexually explicit scenes.

The director's cuts will also feature extended run times, with an hour of footage added to each movie. A Child of Fire originally ran to 134 minutes while The Scargiver had a run time of 122 minutes, meaning that both titles will now be over three hours long. While this will allow time for the characters to be explored further beyond the worldbuilding and action, addressing a major complaint from Rebel Moon reviews, it remains to be seen if the director's cuts are received any better. Below, see the Rotten Tomatoes scores for both titles:

Title

RT Critic Score

RT Audience Score

Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)

21%

57%

Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver (2024)

15%

48%

The audience scores for the Rebel Moon movies were slightly better, but still Rotten. While the new cuts may address some of the viewers' issues as well, it is unknown how well they will perform, considering the fact that they don't necessarily have a very robust fanbase to begin with. This situation is very different from the popular 2021 director's cut Zack Snyder's Justice League, as the original 2017 cut was the result of reshoots with a different director's vision after Snyder stepped away from the project, whereas the sci-fi movies were already uncompromised Snyder projects in their original cuts.
