Brand-new footage from Rebel Moon finally arrives from Netflix. The movie, which premieres on Netflix on December 22, is the next project from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Watchmen director Zack Snyder, who most recently teamed with the streaming service for the zombie epic Army of the Dead. Rebel Moon is the first part of an original sci-fi story that follows a rebel leader gathering forces for a battle against the corrupt Mother World, starring an ensemble cast that includes Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher, Cleopatra Coleman, and Anthony Hopkins.

As part of their global fan event TUDUM, Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon.

"I thought I knew what a big movie was until I came onto this," says star Ed Skrein in the introduction to the video seen above, which shares behind-the-scenes footage from the story that Snyder has been working on for nearly two decades. Interviews with the other stars further reveal the immense scale of the production and how much time it took to prepare themselves to bring it to life.

Zack Snyder's Career Has Perfectly Prepared Him For Rebel Moon

There are quite a few parallels to the Star Wars universe that can be found in the Rebel Moon footage. This includes the use of lightsaber-esque swords in multiple sequences, seemingly wielded by Doona Bae's cyborg swordmaster Nemesis. When that is taken in conjunction with the broader story of rebellion against a powerful political force, the homage here is quite clear.

This is far from a liability for Rebel Moon. Snyder has built his career on applying his own signature style to properties that have existed before. In addition to his many comic book adaptations, which include 300, Watchmen, and DC Universe movies including Zack Snyder's Justice League, he kicked off his career by helming the remake of the 1978 zombie classic Dawn of the Dead, penned by fellow future comic book movie vet James Gunn.

He has long proven his ability to take stylistic and narrative elements from other projects and craft them into something unique. This time, he is doing so in a more elliptical way, outside of the actual Star Wars franchise. More than anything, Rebel Moon wears its influences on its sleeve in order to differentiate itself from that universe and show what it might look like if it was populated with characters, worlds, and events from Snyder's own imagination.
