New images from Rebel Moon reveal more of Zack Snyder's space epic, including an explosive spaceship battle and Jimmy, a robot character played by Anthony Hopkins. After the success of Army of the Dead on Netflix, Snyder's next movie will see the filmmaker ing forces with the streamer once more for a fantastical space opera. Rebel Moon, due out on the service later this year, stars Sofia Boutella as Kora, a young woman who must amass a rebel army to fight back against a tyrannical dictator.

Now, as the Rebel Moon release date inches closer, Empire has released new images from the film, teasing several of the main characters and the large scale of things to come. Check out the new images below:

The images spotlight Hopkins' Jimmy, Boutella's Kora, and Kai, a character played by Charlie Hunnam. In addition to its exciting cast of characters, one of the images also suggests that the film will feature Snyder's signature taste for explosive, stylized action.

How Rebel Moon Can Be Different From Past Zack Snyder Movies

Snyder has made no secret of the fact that Rebel Moon started off as a pitch for a Star Wars movie many years ago. The film ultimately never came to fruition, however, and the filmmaker now gets to present something that is wholly his vision. This is in contrast to much of Snyder's other work over the past decade, which sees the director working in established franchises.

Most of Snyder's biggest movies thus far are based on existing intellectual property, including 300, Watchmen, Man of Steel, and Zack Snyder's Justice League. The filmmaker is, of course, no stranger to making entirely original films, but they are generally regarded as lesser entries in his career. Suckerpunch and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, for example are not generally considered among his best work.

Following his departure from the DCU, Snyder has been able to flex his storytelling muscles more, creating a new zombie franchise with Army of the Dead. Now, Rebel Moon will be his biggest original movie yet, and it too is expected to set up a sequel. It remains to be seen how Rebel Moon will fare, but, free from the constraints the come with working within established franchises, it could end up being Snyder's most unique and personal movie yet.
