Summary

  • Rebel Moon Part Two is an intense sci-fi action in which Kora and her rebels must protect Veldt from the powerful forces of the Motherworld.
  • Director Zack Snyder teases an even more intense director's cut of Rebel Moon, complete with additional scenes and deeper character development.
  • The warriors' pasts come to light as they face an incoming invasion, forcing them to evolve from mercenaries to true heroes of Veldt.

Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver follows Kora and her band of rebels as they continue to protect Veldt from the Motherworld. After Kai sells them out to the Imperium and Kora defeats Noble, they must regroup and figure out a plan to protect the farming village from the incoming invasion of the much larger and more powerful forces from the Motherworld. With harsh truths about their pasts coming to light and time running out, these rebels will need to step up and become the heroes that the village needs if they have any chance of coming out of this fight alive.

Rebel Moon is Zack Snyder's opportunity to go all out on his own original franchise, and he does just that, further fleshing out this sci-fi world. The cast is phenomenal, with star Sofia Boutella standing in her performance, tapping into an incredibly emotional and physically taxing performance. Snyder has also excitedly teased a directors' cut of Rebel Moon coming to Netflix later this year, which will be even more intense, with scenes included that were cut both for time and to keep the PG-13 rating.

Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder's new epic Netflix space fantasy sets up a new sci-fi universe and ends with a cliffhanger setting up part 2.

Screen Rant interviewed director Zack Snyder about Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver's ragtag group growing into the heroes needed to fight against the Motherworld and how Netflix gave him complete creative control over the director's cut of Rebel Moon. Snyder also broke down why they studied actual battles from history and why it was important to have the actors fully immersed in the world, including real wheat.

Zack Snyder Says The Heroes "Need To Be Healed" By The Conflict

After being betrayed by one of their own, the heroes are left with a choice. Their decision to step up and continue their quest to protect the village from the Motherworld even after losing many of their fellow rebels is the first step towards becoming the heroes that Veldt needs. While they may have started out as a group of selfish mercenaries, the oncoming war brings out the potential for more from each of them.

Zack Snyder: I really think that's in the end sort of the thesis of movie 2, a hundred percent. What we learn about our heroes is they're not just mercenaries or guns for hire. They happen to be all in need of the catharsis that this conflict would bring them. Regardless of the odds, in a lot of ways, the odds don't matter in comparison to their personal struggles and their need to be healed in some ways by the conflict that's coming.

While this is a science fiction movie, it shouldn't come as a surprise to learn that Snyder looked to actual wars when researching Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver. This can not only bring authenticity and inspiration to how he shoots the scenes but also inform how the overall attack would play out, especially with such a major force bearing down on the rebels.

Zack Snyder: We talked a lot about World War II, a lot about what we would do, the notion was that at some point we were going to have in the field in front of Veldt, there was going to be these mechanized sort of tanks. There was going to be tons of soldiers. We were going to have to figure out how to hold them back, how to slow them down because in the end, we know that the Motherworld's forces, if they came in full force, would completely devastate the village.

There's nothing you could do. They really had to set up these obstacles of negotiation, of trickery, of all these things to delay because really it's a delay tactic. They've got to think of another thing. I won't say what it is, but they have to have another plan because their current plan is fine to slow them down, but maybe not to win the war.

Zack Snyder Teases The Rebel Moon Director's Cut Was Made "To Exactly My Specs"

Snyder became synonymous with the idea of a "director's cut" after the famed "Snyder Cut" of the DCEU's Justice League. Interestingly, Rebel Moon will get a similar treatment, with Netflix allowing the director to make both the PG-13 and R-rated versions of the movie. The director's cut won't only be R-rated but will dig deeper into different characters, scenes, and potentially even lore that couldn't fit in the PG-13 version.

Zack Snyder: I'll be honest, it's probably the most rewarding part was the deal I made with Netflix. They're incredible partners, and they are to be able to complete the director's cuts to exactly my specs. Running time is not an issue. Rating not an issue. All the things that I've been able to do with the director's cuts, really that's a dream come true for any filmmaker to have complete free hand is a cool thing.

The incredible partners that Netflix have been on the PG 13, and that is to say the test screenings, the normal notes from the studio, the normal stuff, the normal interaction that you would have to kind of get this property to the place where it can be seen by the most people. That's a fun job to do together.

For all that, the complete sort of hands-off whatever you think for the director's cuts is also really fun too. So that's the thing I'm most proud of is that waiting for you guys in August is this ridiculous, insane romp that I think is going to be for certain people, the best of both worlds.

Rebel Moon brings the planet of Veldt to life, with Snyder even using actual crops and harvesting to make the reality of this world feel even more immersive. This included the actors working in actual wheat fields that they planted, allowing them to truly experience this world as well as creating epic sweeping shots.

Zack Snyder: I really wanted that part. I felt like that was where we were really going to bond with the village in sort of the tactile agricultural immersion that I was asking the guys to go on. Because it's the most elemental thing that you can think of is this connection to the land and having the actors really doing that work that becomes the thing that you defend.

Obviously your investment is that of blood, sweat, and tears, and that's what we really wanted to achieve. By planting this gigantic acres and acres of wheat that we could actually photograph for real, it really gave the place this kind of realism and it's a place in the world that you could go visit and feel it. I think that even for the actors, it was an incredible way to kind connect to the story.
