Rockstar Games recently announced the end of no more Red Dead Online updates are planned, with the developer instead focusing on creating Grand Theft Auto 6.

Red Dead Online was a very ambitious project, but it never quite lived up to fan expectations. The multiplayer title gives players a massive Wild West sandbox to explore, with the game world matching the impressive detail featured in RDR2's map. Red Dead Online also includes a storyline for players to experience, with their player character encountering all manner of outlaws and frontier folk. Players can adopt different careers, like bounty hunting or animal trapping, which adds even more variety to the experience. Unfortunately, a lack of regular updates means that the online game's playerbase quickly began to dwindle following its 2019 launch. With Red Dead Online updates officially dead, players can only mourn the game's grand potential.

Following Rockstar Games' announcement that no more updates are planned, Red Dead Online players are now holding in-game funerals for the multiplayer title. Twitter s hosting and attending these somber events include the RDR social  Red Dead Online Hub, YouTuber RealDirtyTyler and Rockstar Games news writer SynthPotato. Players are encouraged to congregate at graveyards and have an in-game drink for Red Dead Online following its sad and untimely death. While servers will remain active for the foreseeable future, these funerals help express that the title is essentially dead and buried.

While Red Dead Online could potentially be resurrected in the future, some fans believe that a Red Dead Redemption 3 without multiplayer would be a better course. While Rockstar has crafted intense and impactful single-player narratives in Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, both titles' online components have received criticism. Rockstar has also focused on ing GTA Online for almost a decade, rather than adding new single-player DLC to either GTA 5 or RDR2. With the early death of Red Dead Online, perhaps the developer will be motivated to its single-player campaigns more in the future.

Red Dead Online created a truly immersive multiplayer Wild West experience, but Rockstar Games sadly failed to give the game the it deserved. Now, with updates ending in favor of Grand Theft Auto 6 development, players are mourning the game and lamenting its wasted potential. The next time a player is riding through the digital hills of Red Dead Online, they should to pour one out for the cooperative cowboy adventure.
