Although fishing as a mechanic exists in plenty of adventure-type games, it is usually tacked on for simply gathering collectables and achievements. While fishing in Red Dead Redemption 2 can provide all of these things, it is unique in that its fishing missions are often required and relay important story information to the characters.

In the Chapter 2 mission “A Fisher of Men,” Arthur decides to take Red Dead Redemption, Jack Marston is the one to kill Agent Ross and avenge his father (and many of the gang) years later. Not only does this mission serve as a character introduction, but also a bookend for the entire franchise.

Later on in Chapter 3, Arthur again goes on a fishing trip in the mission “The New South.” The mission takes place on a beautiful lake, and Arthur is ed by Hosea and Dutch, the two main leaders of the Van Der Linde gang and Arthur’s surrogate family. This mission is one of the first moments in which Arthur lets his guard down, allowing players to see past his rough exterior and into the vulnerable human being that he is. Allowing the player to fish and row makes the mission much more interactive than a cutscene, ensuring players stay engaged. At the end of the mission, the trio finds a beautiful location for their next camp, signaling hope for the gang.

In addition to Red Dead Redemption 2’s required story missions, the game also includes optional fishing adventures such as “The Veteran” storyline. Not only is this mission more difficult and action-oriented than previous fishing missions, but it also only becomes available in Chapter 6, when the main story nears its end. In this mission players see a rapidly changing Arthur do his best to enjoy a day of fishing with a stranger, despite the dangerous circumstances that surround him and the gang. This mission serves as one of the final moments of peace and quiet before the climax of Red Dead Redemption 2's story.

While Red Dead Redemption 2’s fishing missions may at first seem like a secondary part of the game’s story, the developers clearly spent a lot of time making sure their dialogs and settings were carefully crafted. A game so full of action and violence needs slow, careful scenes to lay the groundwork for characters who would eventually evolve into heroes and villains throughout the franchise’s story.
