The general consensus about sequels is that they aren't very good. Fans compare them to the first movie and think that the story, character development, and other elements just don't measure up. But when it comes to the horror genre, there are plenty of sequels that have pleasantly surprised fans as they are just as scary, thrilling, and sometimes even more inventive than the first film.

Doctor Sleep (2019)

Shining didn't disappoint horror fans. Danny Torrance is now all grown up and still haunted by the events of the first movie.

Doctor Sleep" as a great horror movie sequel and Reddit katiejim shared that it was "a great movie" and continued, "The acting was awesome and the scene with Jacob Tremblay is one of the more disturbing I’ve seen."

Child's Play 2 (1980)

Child's Play 2 and recommended a few horror sequels, writing that the first movie is still the best but these are "all great sequels in their own right that either do something quite different or almost rival them."

While fans love watching young Andy and his incredibly scary doll Chucky in the first movie, some like the sequel, when Andy finds a foster home and realizes that Chucky is still around and still very dangerous. The movie also sets up the bond between Andy and Kyle, who are also reunited in the TV adaptation Chucky.

Scream 2 (1997)

Scream 2 and wrote that the movie "does a good job of continuing the story, keeps the tone of the original and that scene of Randy in the park while in the phone with the killer is actually really good."

While the original Scream movie does receive the bulk of the praise, the sequel does have the same creepy yet entertaining feeling from the first film and it's interesting seeing Sidney at college. The common thread in the entire franchise is that Ghostface will never let Sidney go and so this story works, too, as she realizes that even though she thought that the horror was over, it's just not.

Friday The 13th because it "introduces Jason." Reddit HannibalKrueger responded, "This one has the best final girl in the franchise for me."

Jason Vorhees kills many people and in the sequel, those at Camp Crystal Lake debate the story of Jason and think about what would happen if he was here. Unfortunately for them, he is, and he truly begins his reign of terror in this second film.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

While the first movie in the The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is a favorite, Reddit SpringtimeBat thinks that the sequel is "severely underrated" and loves that it's a "parody of 80's horror and how it makes fun of the horror franchises the original inspired."

The second movie feels a lot like the first one, as Leatherface targets teenagers, and it does stand out among the genre.

Insidious: Chapter 2 because "It made me like the first one better because it addressed all the unanswered questions." In the 2010 movie, Renai and Josh realize that there is a supernatural presence in their home, and in the sequel, more layers are added to the story as audiences see Lorraine hiring Elise Rainier because Josh has been possessed.

In the sequel, Sister Charlotte and six orphans move into a new house and right away, the characters are chased by a demon who has come from the Annabelle doll. Whether people find dolls to be unsettling or not, it's tough not to get swept away by the incredibly creepy tone of this sequel.

Evil Dead 2 (1987)
