Two of platforming action of Mega Man, the stylish combat of Devil May Cry, or the zombie-slaying of Dead Rising, Capcom titles often have a distinctive feel that goes beyond nostalgic appeal.
The two franchises that have been more successful for the rest in recent times are Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. The former is one of Capcom's longest-running franchise, dating back all the way to the PlayStation 1 era. Not only has it spawned a highly successful string of live-action movies, but gamers never go more than a couple of years without some reason to revisit Racoon City. As for Monster Hunter, the series is a bit more recent, especially in the West. After finding massive success in Japan, it could be argued that it didn't hit worldwide appeal until Monster Hunter: World, the latest game in the franchise.
While the most recent entries for both Resident Evil and Monster Hunter are undoubtedly classics, it may shock some fans to learn that the games are the two best selling titles in Capcom's history. every Street Fighter, Devil May Cry, and Resident Evil title ever released.
While Resident Evil can't claim the top spot, it can claim a victory in of volume. The third, fourth, and fifth slots on the list are all prior Resident Evil titles, while Monster Hunter's Iceborne expansion shows up at number seven. Fighting game fans shouldn't fret too much, as the Super Nintendo rendition of Street Fighter II is the sixth entry with 6.3 million units sold. Devil May Cry first shows up on the list with Devil May Cry 5 at number seventeen, while Dead Rising 2 sneaks into the last sport of the top 20 with 3.1 million units sold.
With many other legacy gaming companies falling to mergers, closures, or internal gambling addiction, it's always heartening for an older fan to look at Capcom. They have an amazing stable of IP and they seem able to keep many of them going longer than similar series from other studios. Fans will always clamor for a new Darkstalkers, Onimusha, or Dino Crisis, but all of those sequels seem somewhat within reach, just waiting for the right time. If Devil May Cry 5 can come out of nowhere and make a huge splash in the current AAA market, truly anything is possible.
