"The Maiden" is a PlayStation 5 demo for Resident Evil Village, which serves as a prelude to RE8 and also shows off some of the impressive technical aspects of the game running on PS5. Throughout the demo, players control the "maiden," although very little is known about her initially. So, who is the maiden in Resident Evil 8, really?

The answer to this question is never explicitly stated. Instead, players have to piece together clues (several of them missable) in order to figure out who the maiden is and why she's in Castle Dimitrescu, the main setting for the demo and one of the new locations for Resident Evil 8. Unfortunately, the reasons are pretty nefarious - and players will have to tread lightly as they try to escape.

The Resident Evil 8 demo on PS5 is short but impressive. The maiden starts off in the dungeons, and it appears she isn't the first person to be tossed down there. After escaping, she begins to wonder the castle and discover some of its insidious secrets. It's during this time that players learn of Alcina Dimitrescu, the lady of the castle, and her three daughters - who appear to make a famous and expensive wine called Sanguis Virginis, with a secret ingredient: actual maiden's blood.

Why The Maiden Is In Castle Dimitrescu In RE8's Demo

Where the Resident Evil 8 Demo Takes Place

Based on notes found in the dungeons and rooms throughout the castle, players can learn of the real reason the maiden is in Castle Dimitrescu in Resident Evil 8's demo. It appears Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters bring young women to the castle as maids, who then later mysteriously disappear. It's presumed these maidens are tortured and killed for the secret ingredient in Sanguis Virginis - and bloodstained clothes of a previous maiden can be found burning in the fireplace, suggesting the maiden in the demo is just the current victim in a long line of them.

This grizzly secret about RE8's wine isn't the only surprise in store for players during the demo. After escaping from one of Dimitrescu's daughters, players meet the lady herself. "So we finally meet," she says, before apparently killing the maiden at the demo's end. This is pretty interesting, because it appears that either Lady Dimitrescu's daughters or someone else is tasked with bringing maids into the castle for the wine, since Lady Dimitrescu hasn't met the maiden before. Perhaps the answer will be found when Resident Evil 8 releases.

Overall, "The Maiden" demo is a great lead-in for Resident Evil Village, and it shows off how well the game will run on the PS5. Several questions still remain in Castle Dimitrescu, but those answers should be found once the game fully releases in May.
