Capcom’s cut the original’s Mercenaries mode, which put players in fast-paced scenarios in the role of a mercenary trying to escape a stage as quickly as possible.
The cut content isn’t going to be the only change to the new version of Resident Evil 3. A trailer for the game showed off the makeover that the Nemesis is getting for the game, and Resident Evil Resistance will launch with two more Masterminds and two more maps than were originally announced.
On the other hand, there seems to be no consolation prize for those who were looking forward to exploring their choices in Resident Evil 3 with Live Selection. In the original game, pivotal moments of the game game players a choice of what to do next and forced them to make a decision under a tight time limit, which led to multiple endings. Resident Evil 3 co-producer Pete Fabiano told GameSpot that the system is being removed to let the game’s director “tell a consistent story with Jill.” While the decision to stick with one canonical narrative may tighten up the story overall, it does remove some of the tension from the original.
Reaction to the announcement from fans has been mixed, with some players posting on Twitter that they’ll miss the Live Selection system and others saying they barely it. Whatever side they fall on, players won’t have to wait long to see how the game feels in action, as Capcom recently announced that a Resident Evil 3 demo is coming soon.
For some players, the lack of Live Selection will be a huge omission, but others will hardly notice it’s not there. What’s certain is that the Resident Evil 3 remake is shaping up to be a significantly different game from the original release, and if it’s made to the same quality as the Resident Evil 2 remake, it could become the definitive version of the game.
Resident Evil 3 will be available April 3, 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
