Resident Evil: Resistance, an asymmetrical multiplayer game packaged with the remake of Resident Evil 3, has changed quite a bit since release. Originally meant to be a standalone game called Project Resistance, Resident Evil: Resistance was changed to be included as part of Jill Valentine's daring escape from Raccoon City in April 2020. Now that some time has ed and Resident Evil: Resistance has gone through some significant changes, it's time to reevaluate what it has to offer.

Resident Evil: Resistance pits four players against one in a tense horror experience. The survivor players must work together, using their skills to outsmart the fifth player, the Mastermind. The Mastermind's job is to place enemies, traps, and even iconic super baddies from Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 in levels to harass and chase players as they attempt to complete objectives to escape. It's a well-executed take on a formula popularized by games like Dead by Daylight, where players battle a powerful killer.

Resident Evil: Resistance began life with four unique maps and a handful of Survivors and Masterminds for players to choose. After several months of patches and updates, Resident Evil: Resistance players now have access to far more content than originally shipped with the game. From consistent balance updates to new skins, including Resident Evil 2 costumes, weapons, and new maps and skill cards, Resident Evil: Resistance is an entirely new beast.

The most dramatic changes involve adding new content to Resident Evil: Resistance. At launch there were only four maps available for survivors and the mastermind to battle over. Now there are a grand total of seven maps with Prison, Bemusement Park, and Uptown added across two major updates. The Prison map adds a secret Umbrella prison, used to test bioweapons against hapless prisoners which includes claustrophobic hallways. Bemusement Park is a remixed version of the Abandoned Park map, and the Uptown Map is a remixed version of the Downtown map. The maps are good and fairly spooky, helping to cement Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil: Resistance's parent game, as one of the best horror games of 2020.

Additional new content for Resident Evil: Resistance includes new weapons, creatures, skins, and skill cards. Survivors now have access to the Kashima and Rai-den weapons. Kashima is an electric short sword that packs a punch but degrades quickly, while the Rai-den offers good stopping power. Jill alone gets access to the Hot Dogger, a powerful melee weapon capable of setting enemies on fire. Masterminds get access to the Ne-a creature and a handful of new skill cards. This, of course is on top of a host of balance reworks and cosmetics.

For fans of Resident Evil: Resistance who may have taken a break from the game, there's enough new content to bring new life into the battle for survival while still honoring Resident Evil series elements. For long-playing veterans, it's nice to see that Capcom is continuing to trickle new content out, keeping the experience fresh. Resident Evil: Resistance  may be tied to Resident Evil 3but it still has a lot to offer those interested in a different take on asymmetrical multiplayer horror.
