Announced during Hazelight’s It Takes Two.

Resident Evil Village has been a huge success for Capcom, with its mixture of intense horror and engaging characters making it one of the most popular games of 2021. Following on from the events of 2017’s Resident Evil 7, Village puts players back into the shoes of unlikely hero Ethan Winters. After the events of 7, Ethan and his wife Mia have moved to a remote location as they strive to move on from the horrific events that befell them in Louisiana. Here they've had their daughter Rosemary, who is just a newborn during Village’s opening scenes. Unfortunately for the young couple, however, Rose is taken away by Resident Evil hero Chris Redfield. What ensues is a bloody and harrowing fight to find Rose and destroy those endangering her.

During The Game Awards 2021 pre-show, host Sydnee Goodman revealed that Resident Evil Village won the Reddit r/gaming’s Game of the Year vote. The final tallies saw Resident Evil Village obtain 30% of the overall votes cast by those on the social news and content website. Unfortunately for Capcom, this win was not reflective of the Game Awards’ own Game of the Year accolade, however, it was no doubt a pleasant surprise for the developer.

As for official TGA 2021 wins for the night, Resident Evil Village’s Maggie Robertson did walk away with the award for Best Performance thanks to her portrayal of Lady Alcina Dimitrescu. Robertson won against some strong competition, with famed thespian Giancarlo Esposito also nominated for the award for his portrayal of Far Cry 6’s manipulative dictator Antón Castillo. Robertson had previously won the award for Best Performer, again for her role as Lady Dimitrescu, at the Golden Joysticks Awards in November.

Many are now eager to hear more about the future of the Resident Evil series. While DLC for Village has been confirmed to be in the works, there has been nothing more revealed about what will be included upon its eventual release. While neither Village’s DLC or Resident Evil 9 appear to be on the imminent horizon, Resident Evil Re:Verse is due to release in 2022. This Resident Evil multiplayer experience was originally set to go live in July 2021, however Capcom decided to delay the launch into next year. Those who have purchased Resident Evil Village will receive Resident Evil Re:Verse for free when it finally releases next year.
