point-and-click genre's best games, thanks to their hilarious characters and interesting puzzles.
The Monkey Island series is set in a fictional version of the Caribbean and follows Guybrush Threepwood, a wannabe swashbuckler who spends the first game attempting to become a pirate, but runs afoul of an undead pirate named LeChuck. The first entry in the series was The Secret of Monkey Island, and it was followed by Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, which followed Guybrush's search for the mythical treasure known as Big Whoop. The people who want to experience these classics can do so via the remakes that were released in 2009 and 2010. The Monkey Island series would receive three more entries, but these were produced by different teams, and these received a more mixed response from critics and fans.
The time has finally come for the Monkey Island series to officially retcon the later entries in the franchise. A new trailer on the Devolver Digital YouTube channel has announced that Return to Monkey Island is currently in development and will launch in 2022. The description of the video confirms that the story will continue from Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, making it the third entry in the series that fans have waited thirty years to play. The trailer confirms that Return to Monkey Island is designed and written by two of the series creators, as Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman are on board, after having smaller roles in Tales of Monkey Island from 2009. The announcement trailer for Return To Monkey Island can be viewed below:
Return to Monkey Island is being made by Ron Gilbert's Terribly Toybox Inc. studio along with Lucasfilm Games. The trailer confirmed that Dominic Armato will return as the voice of Guybrush Threepwood. There is also a website for Return to Monkey Island, which shows Monkey Island depicted using the game's new art style. It's currently unclear what platforms Return to Monkey Island will be released on, but a PC version is all but guaranteed.
The first two Monkey Island games received high-quality special editions and the positive response to those games proved that there is still a lot of love for Guybrush Threepwood. The Monkey Island franchise has lasted for 30 years and it's amazing to think that it will finally receive a proper continuation after all of this time. This also means that the cliffhanger ending of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge can finally be resolved in a satisfying way.
Return to Monkey Island is currently in development and will be released in 2022.
