Indeed, Rick doesn’t usually indulge in any drug that’s local to Earth, as he prefers narcotics found elsewhere in the universe. And now, Rick finally explains the real reason why he’s obsessed with alien drugs.

In Oni Press’ Rick and Morty: Finals Week #1 - SheRick Holmes and Mortson by Daniel Kibblesmith and Priscilla Tramontano, Rick and Morty take to the stars in search of a mystery so difficult to solve, that no one in the universe can do it except for Rick himself. Rick and Morty's Rick itting why he does alien drugs.

Morty is immediately taken aback by the fact that Rick is just steadily doing space drugs while they’re solving someone’s murder, but Rick counters Morty’s objections by noting that Sherlock Holmes himself was no stranger to partaking in hard narcotics. Not only that, but Rick also adds, “My system doesn’t even regular drugs at this point, that s**t is like gummy vitamins to me”.

The Drug Rick is Taking in This Rick and Morty Comic Explains His Insane Tolerance

Rick and Morty season 1, episode 11 “Ricksy Business”

Rick and Morty's Rick getting high on Kalaxian Crystals.

The drugs Rick is smoking in this comic, Kalaxian Crystals, aren’t unique to this one storyline alone, as Rick and Morty fans will recognize this narcotic from the season 1 episode “Ricksy Business”. In that episode, Rick, Morty, and Summer throw a house party, and about halfway through the party, the entire house gets transported to an alien planet that is safe enough to continue partying on, so Rick elects to keep the house there for the duration. However, it was soon revealed that that wasn’t the only reason Rick wanted to stay in this world.

Apparently, the world they’re transported to is home to Kalaxian Crystals, which can be crushed into powder and ingested, giving the an intense yet fleeting feeling of energy and euphoria. What’s more interesting than the effects of the drug, however, is what Rick’s willing to sacrifice to get it - or, rather, who he’s willing to sacrifice. Rick sends Morty, Abrodolph Lincoler, and Nancy to go retrieve the crystals on a deadly planet, and Lincoler seemingly dies on the trek. Yet, the risk of someone dying didn’t outweigh the benefit of the high Rick would get by doing Kalaxian Crystals.

Kalaxian Crystal is Just 1 of the Many Alien Drugs Rick Regularly Does in Rick & Morty

Rick is willing to send friends and loved ones to their potential deaths for just the chance of getting Kalaxian Crystals, which speaks to how addictive and intense the crystals truly are. However, that drug is just the tip of the iceberg for what Rick is willing to pump into his body for the sake of riding a high. Most of the alien drugs fans see Rick do aren’t named, or are some jumble of Sci-Fi nonsense, but their names aren’t as important as the fact that Rick is clearly game for any and every mind-altering substance available to him.

As Rick ingested anything and everything he could get his hands on across the universe that promised an escape from reality, he totally fried his system to the point where drugs local to Earth had absolutely no effect on him. It was always assumed that Rick just preferred alien drugs, but now fans know the truth, as Rick and Morty explains that Rick is ‘obsessed’ with alien drugs because the ones on Earth just don’t work on him anymore.
